Data Detectives – Solving Mysteries with SQL

Introduction:

In SQL for Kids, your child becomes a “data detective,” learning how to find, sort, and organize information hidden inside a database — the same technology that powers apps, websites, and online games. They’ll work with fun, relatable topics like pets, superheroes, and video game scores, using SQL commands to ask the computer clever questions and get precise answers. Along the way, they’ll develop problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of how data shapes the digital world. By the end of the course, they’ll have built and managed their very own mini-database — a project that combines analytical thinking with creative play, preparing them for a future where data is everywhere.

Roadmap:

Week 1 – Meet SQL (The Treasure Map Keeper)

Goal: Find out what SQL is and how it helps us store and find information.

Session 1:

  • Learn that SQL is like talking to a giant treasure chest full of information.
  • See how databases keep things neat (like rows in a table).
  • Activity: Look at a pretend “Pet Shop” table with names, animals, and colors.

Session 2:

  • Meet the basic parts: tables, rows, and columns.
  • Activity: Draw your own table of “Favorite Superheroes” with their powers.

Session 3:

  • Introduce the word SELECT (to ask the database for stuff).
  • Activity: “SELECT” all pets from your pet shop table and read them out loud.
Week 2 – Finding the Right Treasure

Goal: Learn to search for exactly what you want.

Session 4:

  • Use WHERE to find only what matches your clue.
  • Activity: Find all pets that are “Cats” in your pet shop.

Session 5:

  • Use AND and OR to make better searches.
  • Activity: Find pets that are “Dogs” OR “Birds”.

Session 6:

  • Use ORDER BY to sort results.
  • Activity: Sort your superheroes by their speed or strength.
Week 3 – Becoming a Data Detective

Goal: Learn how to ask for special results.

Session 7:

  • Use COUNT to see how many things you have.
  • Activity: Count how many pets are “Cats” in the table.

Session 8:

  • Use MAX, MIN, and AVG to find biggest, smallest, or average.
  • Activity: Find the oldest pet or the tallest superhero.

Session 9:

  • Use GROUP BY to put similar things together.
  • Activity: Group pets by type (Dog, Cat, Fish).
Week 4 – Building Your Own Treasure Chest

Goal: Learn to create and add to your own database table.

Session 10:

  • Use CREATE TABLE to make a new table.
  • Activity: Build a “Video Game High Scores” table with columns for name, score, and game.

Session 11:

  • Use INSERT INTO to add new rows.
  • Activity: Add your own and your friends’ high scores.

Session 12:

  • Use UPDATE to change info and DELETE to remove it.
  • Activity: Fix a spelling mistake or remove an old score.
Week 5 – The Big SQL Adventure

Goal: Combine everything you’ve learned into a fun project.

Session 13:

  • Plan your project: a Pet Shop, a Superhero Database, or a Video Game Scores list.

Session 14:

  • Fill it with data, search it with SELECT, sort it, and group it.

Session 15:

  • Share your database story with friends or family — you’re now a Data Detective!
